Real Food On A Budget – Food Away From Home

As I’m away from home at the moment, it seems fitting for this week’s edition of Real Food On A Budget to be about sourcing real food while away from home. I always try and stay in a hotel/apartment with a full kitchen so that I can do my own cooking for my family.

Whether it’s on holiday/vacation, a business trip or other reason to be eating food away from home, here are my budget tips:

Take Pantry Supplies With You – whether it’s coconut flour or your favorite teas or spices, take a small supply of essential ingredients from home so that you don’t have to try and source (and pay for) the ingredients at your destination.

Make A Shopping List & Menu – just like you would do for home, I like to allow a couple of luxuries when I’m away from home, and include them in my plan accordingly.

Take Your Own Food On The Plane – healthier and save on the cost of exorbitant plane food.

Rely On Frugal Meals – for example – the versatile egg can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch or dinner!

Search online before you leave – whether it’s supermarkets who will deliver to your hotel or local organic farm fresh produce deliver, hopping online before you leave and ordering for essentials like bread and eggs to be delivered can save a lot of headaches for sourcing food for your first couple of meals.

Ask locals – for suggestions for local real food eating options, delivery services, supermarkets or whatever local knowledge you need to learn.

My food away from home which is pictured above includes eggs, local organic bread, yoghurt, bananas, plums and my “treat” – a raw fruit and nut bar. I also bought some organic butter, carrots and milk. These essentials have nourished me for a number of meals.

Please share your tips for eating on a budget when you’re away from home!
