Real Food On A Budget – Freezer Meals

Freezer Meals

In this weeks Real Food On A Budget I’ll be taking you through the ultimate convenience in the kitchen – Freezer Meals.

Freezer meals are excellent to help you with real food on a budget because you can buy in-season produce when it’s cheaper and cook it straight away, making meals for months!

You can spend an ENTIRE day making meal after meal to see you through for months. Another option is to spend a Sunday afternoon – cooking and freezing meals for the week, so you’re all prepared when the 5:30 “what’s for dinner” panic strikes.

My first experience of freezer meals was when I was in my early 20s (well before meeting my Husband and having kids!). I would make a giant batch of bolognaise once every month or two and freeze it in single sized portions to reheat when I got home from work. It was a convenient concept when I was only cooking for myself and even more so now that I’m cooking for a family of 4.

You don’t have to just limit yourself to only preparing dinner freezer meals – in the incredible resource for preparing meals – Freezer Cooking Guide, you’ll find sweet treat recipes which you can prepare in bulk for when the need for a sweet treat arises. I often will cook a double batch of whatever muffins or cookies I’m baking just to freeze for a later date.

Make sure that all of your cooking for the freezer is well labeled – including what the meal is, how many portions are included and when it was made. That way, there won’t be any mystery meals lurking in your freezer and this will help you plan your weekly meals for your family.

When taking the meals out of the freezer to use, I place them in the fridge to thaw overnight and then reheat them on the stove top or in the oven, depending on the meal.

The Freezer Cooking Guide is an excellent resource to help you plan and cook your freezer meals. Complete with recipes and shopping lists for 22 Breakfasts, 10 Lunches, 16 Dinners, 28 Snacks and Sides and 8 Desserts (all grain free!) as well as reheating instruction cards – the Freezer Cooking Guide is all you need to succeed! Bolognaise is still my most frequently made and enjoyed freezer meal – as I said above – it was convenient in my single 20s and it’s still convenient today for my family of 4!
