Lunch Box ABC’s – Letter A Ideas

Welcome to a brand new series – Lunch Box ABC’s! This week I’ll start with Letter A Ideas, but first let me share details of this exciting new series.

My almost 4 year old has been showing interest in REALLY learning his alphabet. Constantly asking what every word of interest starts with. For example, recent inquiries have included – “Mummy, what does light start with?’… “Mummy, what does bath start with?”… “Mummy, what does Cheeky Monkey start with?” (Yes, we regularly call him a Cheeky Monkey!) Sometimes we tell him, other times his almost 6 year old brother tells him and he’s satisfied and moves on to ask the next question…

These conversations go on ALL DAY LONG! I love that he’s so enthusiastic about learning his phonics, so I thought I’d start a really fun regular activity by incorporating his love of alphabet learning into his meal time.

Since my kitchen is OVERFLOWING with Bento Accessories, I thought it would be a full sensory experience making Alphabet Inspired Bento Lunch Boxes for him (and his older brother too!).

Working our way through the alphabet, I see this being a really fun adventure, while being educational too.

I’ll include as many elements highlighting the letter, including the food itself, bento accessories, the color or shape of the food, really ANYTHING which can provide a further learning experience for all their senses. (Yes, I’ve been reading a few Montessori Books and incorporate sensory learning into our homeschooling routine.)

Lets get started…

While I didn’t include all of these in this week’s lunch box, for your inspiration here are some Letter A Ideas:

  • Avocado – chopped or spread on bread/pancakes
  • Apple – whole, chopped, sliced using A Shaped cutters
  • Almonds – whole or butter
  • Aeroplane shapes/cutters/picks
  • Apple shaped container
  • Raisin Ants on a log of celery (almond butter an optional extra!)

Here’s the very first lunch box in our Lunch Box ABC’s Series:

Included in this lunch box are:

  • Apple Slices in an Apple Cup and an Apple Airplane (I used a mini cookie cutter.)
  • Raisins pretending to be Ants
  • Almonds
  • Anzac Biscuits (Click here for the recipe.)
  • Avocado Sandwiches with an Airplane food pick.

As this lunch box was made on Anzac Day (hence the Anzac Cookies) we had this lunch as a picnic at a park. The kids were delighted with their boxes and had heaps of fun working their way through the yummy contents.

It was my turn to ask my almost 4 year old – “What does apple start with?”… “What does airplane start with?” … “What does ants start with”… and each time he confidently answered correctly – A, A, A. He was proud of himself to know the letter and I was a proud Mummy too!

Here the boys are enjoying the picnic in the park – it was a gorgeous, sunny day here in Melbourne:

If you can think of more Letter A Ideas, please share them in the comments – thank you.
