Lorne Weekend
Welcome to a new series on the blog – Family Travel Memories. I’ve been browsing through family travel photos of trips we’ve taken since my kids were born and I wanted to share them on the blog, well at least what I can remember from 5+ years ago!
When my oldest was 9 months old we braved our very first family holiday. We decided to make it a driving holiday and booked a Lorne Weekend Away, which only involved a couple of hours drive , from our home in Melbourne, with our as yet un-traveled child.
On the way to Lorne stopped for a strawberry picking adventure. Our little man was fascinated at the whole process of picking strawberries from the vine.
We visited the stunning Erskine Falls and marveled at the picturesque landscape and waterfall.
We then checked into our hotel The Cumberland Lorne.
Being our first time traveling with a child we thought a one bedroom apartment would be sufficient. We thought it wouldn’t be necessary to stay in a two bedroom apartment when our son would just be sleeping in a portacot and we could position him in the lounge room.
We had no idea about what it would actually be like having a baby sleeping in the kitchen/lounge room, meaning we had to tiptoe in and out of the kitchen if we needed anything and had to pretty much keep out of the room when he went to sleep.
We learned our lesson and vowed that the next time we traveled we would book a separate bedroom for the baby!
He had a great time though. We took along his favourite toy enclosure from home, keeping him safe from harm. Yes, he’s watching the Simpson movie below!
Aside from our own error of staying in a smaller than room than we should have, the hotel was wonderful. We enjoyed a swim in their indoor pool, wandering around the hotel’s grounds and the location is fantastic as it’s a short walk through a private stairway to all of the Lorne restaurants, cafes, shops and beach.
Following a good nights sleep (well, as good a night as you can have with a baby who wakes a few times a night…) at our hotel, we kept driving along the Great Ocean Road, passing breathtaking views along the way. Like this one from Teddys Lookout.
We took a drive further down the Great Ocean Road to the Twelve Apostles. They are an awesome sight close up.
I absolutely adore Lorne itself. It’s got a relaxed beach-side atmosphere and there are beautiful walks in every direction.
Thank you for taking this trip down memory lane with me. It’s inspired me to think about booking another holiday to Lorne in the near future!
