Low Carb Travel Tips

Recently I enjoyed a few weeks away in Japan and Singapore. While away I enjoyed mostly low carb, keto diet foods. In all honesty though, I did sample non-keto foods, by choice as I felt it was the one time I’d be in Japan and wanted to try different foods when I felt like it.

It is, however, possible to keep 100% low carb, if that’s something you want to do. I took along heaps of food from home and shared my Low Carb Travel Essentials before I left. Here’s the video showing you my low carb travel essentials, click here to watch on YouTube or hit play below:

I SOOO appreciated having my travel essentials on me, my stash fuelled me with snacks and kept me healthy and feeling great.

Now I’m going to share the food I ate on a day to day basis. Here are my low carb travel tips to make it easy to keep keto while traveling:

Breakfast

If you’re staying in a hotel where a buffet breakfast is included then here are the options to go for at the buffet:

  • Eggs – fried/scrambled/omelette
  • Sausages
  • Bacon
  • Vegetables (I found heaps of vegetables offered at Japanese breakfast buffets.)
  • Fruit – berries

These are a couple of the breakfast I put together while at our hotel at Osaka.

And this was the pretty plate I put together from the breakfast buffet in Kyoto.

When you don’t have the option of a hotel buffet, try and find a cafe which will prepare you eggs to your liking with a side of bacon/sausages.

Some even go to McDonalds wherever they are and go for a breakfast sandwich without the muffin. That wasn’t an option I went for, but each to their own.

In Japan when I didn’t have the option for a hotel buffet, I chose to grab a few options from a convenience store. My favourites were yoghurt, fresh berries, salami or cheese.

Lunch

Salads are an easy lunch staple which you can add low carb, high fat friendly ingredients to. I found chicken salads with heaps of greens that I added an avocado to and you could add some avocado oil or your oil of choice too, if you’re able to get hold of some. You could even add a hand full of nuts for additional protein and healthy fats.

Burgers without the bun were another lunch staple. Burgers are easy to find while sightseeing, and you just ask for one without the bun, or ditch it if you want instead.

Local markets are an excellent spot to explore as well as experience local cuisine. I enjoyed melt in the mouth tuna and freshly cooked Wagyu Beef at markets in Japan.

Dinner

If I could use one word to describe my dinners it would be MEAT! Meat salads, meats on skewers, meat on sticks, meat in bowls. There were so many low carb friendly options from street food to restaurants and even food halls, that I was spoilt for choice and enjoyed tasty dinners every night.

Snacks

Convenience stores were excellent for snacks on the go. There’s a choice of salamis and dried meats, cheese, fresh berries, yoghurt and nuts.

Carbs In Moderation

Overall, it’s definitely possible to keep keto while travelling. It’s up to you though if you want to keep to it 100% or plan ahead and allow yourself some non low carb foods, in moderation.

Most of my meals were low carb, but I allowed myself to enjoy Japanese foods that weren’t low carb – without any guilt or regret. I’d say I kept Keto 90% of the time and the other 10% were foods that I hadn’t seen before and enjoyed on my trip of a lifetime.

Of course it can be slippery slope for some. So, really think about it before, be prepared and most importantly – enjoy your travels.
