Real Food On A Budget – Meat & Chicken

Last week I covered Real Food On A Budget – Fruit and Vegetables and in this week’s edition I’m going to explore ways to feed your family meat and chicken on a budget:

Budget Cuts Of Meat – this includes pieces like:

  • Chicken Drumsticks
  • Chicken Drumettes
  • Chicken Wings
  • Lamb Forequarter Chops (which are delicious slow cooked!)
  • Slow cooking cuts of beef (also delicious slow cooked!)
  • Soup Bones

An example of a frugal meal is Chicken and Pumpkin Bake, (pictured above) it’s made using chicken drumettes, a part of this chicken which is incredibly cheap and the kids happen to love.

Offal – often neglected, offal provides incredible value for money and nourishing goodness. We love liver, tongue and often pick up Lamb Necks (grass fed) at the local farmers market for just $3.99 a kilo! For more Offal Ideas, check out this Offal/Organ Meats Board On Pinterest.

Get more stock/bone broth in your diet – Once you’ve cooked your budget cuts of chicken or bought soup bones, you can make stock/bone broth so you can draw every ounce of goodness from the produce you have bought. If you’re looking for ways to include stock/broth in your family’s diet then click through and read 10 Ways To Get Your Kids To Consume More Bone Broth.

Buy in bulk – direct from a local farmer. You could even share a 1/4,1/2 or even whole cow with friends/family for quality meat at a budget price.

Include More Legumes/Vegetables – to help stretch your meat/chicken further. For example, whenever I cook a bolognese, I include at least as much vegetables (mushrooms, carrots, onions and more) or even lentils so that the dish goes even further and can last over a number of meals.

Without contradicting myself completely another thought is to consider going meatless more often to save. When you’re planning your weekly meals, think about incorporating more vegetarian meals so there’s a little less meat/chicken that you need to budget for, for the week.
